Who was Franz Schubert? Cueing on the anguish and illness of his final years, today’s “new Schubert” is a challenging and often harrowing creative force, anticipating Dostoyevsky and Kafka, and resisting categorization.

Join PostClassical Ensemble and the virtuosic bass trombonist David Taylor for a startling re-contextualization of a revered composer, including two newly commissioned world premieres.

[pullquote_left]”Taylor left every brass player in the packed house shaking his head in disbelief.” – Chicago Tribune[/pullquote_left]The March 31 concert revisits one of PostClassical Ensemble’s edgiest adventures: the unclassifiable bass trombone virtuoso David Taylor playing late Schubert songs with chamber orchestra accompaniment. Taylor’s improvisations unforgettably seize on the harrowing existential content of this music; he has made Schubert/Taylor his own.

As a part of this project, PostClassical Ensemble has commissioned of a trombone / chamber orchestra version of Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata, which we believe will become the first “classical” bass trombone concerto to enter the repertoire.

Hear David Taylor play the finale to Schubert’s “Arpeggione” Sonata with piano accompaniment — a “trial run” for the March 31 Arpeggione Concerto world premiere (with pianist Edward Laurel).
