This one-of-a-kind theatrical presentation, with actors and lighting design, traces Ives’s life —including his passionate courtship, his fierce Transcendentalism, and his cranky politics— through music, letters, and essays. The repertoire —for voice, piano, and chamber orchestra— ranges from the mystic The Unanswered Question to the indescribably rambunctious Over the Pavements. William Sharp, for decades a prime exponent of Ives’s songs, contributes such Ives classics as “The Circus Band” and “General William Booth Enters into Heaven,” as well as a serene Ives set arranged for voice and orchestra by John Adams.
